Nonghet District, Laos

About the community

Nonghet is a remote area surrounded by mountains in the northeast of Laos, close to the border with Vietnam.

About 65% of the population in Nonghet are Hmong people, who are one of the most disadvantaged ethnic groups in Laos.

Laos is the most heavily bombed country, per capita, in history. Unexploded ordnance around Nonghet has left the community in fear and it is difficult to farm and build in new areas.

Youth in Nonghet made a short video to introduce their village to you. This is one of many videos you can expect to receive from your community, as they love to share their lives with sponsors.

“If there were no bombs I would be very happy. When my father is farming I would not be worried, and we would not be afraid when we walk around.” Ming Yu

“I have a big dream that I would like to go on to further education at university, where I could major in my favourite subject – Lao language. I would like to teach Lao language so I can bring all my knowledge and experience and transfer it to the children in my community.” Meethor, 12

“The position I have in my family has changed. It’s not like before when all I did was housework and help my husband. I didn’t have much power in my family to make financial decisions. But now I do.” Mai
