Girls around the world share their thoughts on equality

When women and girls get opportunities, communities benefit. Gender equality has profound and widespread implications for economic and social development around the world.

To mark International Day of the Girl, we found out from girls and young women why equality is important for them.

Here’s what they had to say.

“Many people hesitate to speak their mind because they are worried about how other people will react. Nevertheless, if you stay silent, people might never abandon their outdated prejudices. Let’s speak up at the right time, in the right place, to protect your own rights and the rights of other girls.” – Hai, 17, Vietnam

“I want to become a businesswomen. Women can do business like men if they have the opportunity. I want to go on to higher education and I am confident to live far away from my family while pursuing my study in the city. What boys can do, girls also can.” – Nita, 11, Cambodia

“I want to work on my uncle’s farm when I grow up so I can earn my living and support my uncle’s family. Women can work and we do not have to be dependent on others.” – Nhi, 11, Vietnam

“In the present day and age, we should be able to get rid of the existence of inequality in our society.” – Aliya, 16, Laos

“I’ve never seen female village chief. I want to see a woman become my village chief to show that women have the same capacity as men.” – Rasmei, 10, Cambodia
